Indie Awards

Blacksburg, Lexington, Harrisonburg, Roanoke, Richmond The national small business movement, Independent We Stand, announced the quarterfinalists, including Walkabout Outfitter in the seventh annual Independent We Stand Independent Small Business of the Year or “Indie Award.” This announcement precedes Small Business Saturday on Nov. 25, encouraging holiday shoppers to support these businesses versus big boxes and national chains.

Walkabout Outfitter is a small, family-owned business started in 2004. Growing from a small 600 square foot showroom in Lexington, VA, they now have 6 locations in Virginia.  Walkabout Outfitter carries everything from the items you would need to hike the Appalachian Trail to being comfortable and casual at your local pub.  Patagonia, The North Face, Eno, Merrell, and Smartwool are just a few of the brands that customers love.  Walkabout also takes pride of working with a team of wonderful people who provide fantastic customer service and care about their community.  Walkabout offers many free classes to help people get outside also does a lot of partnering in community events.  “This year’s quarterfinalists represent the independent businesses from across the country who go above and beyond to support their local economies,” said Bill Brunelle, co-founder of Independent We Stand. “This award is our way of honoring the contributions they’ve made to their communities.”

Voting is now underway at www.IndieBizAward.com through Dec. 10. Voters may visit the website to cast one vote each day.

The 2017 Indie winner will receive prizes that will help to market their business which helps keep them as a small independent going in a challenging world of on-line shopping and big box stores.  It is recognized that small businesses help local economies greatly.

Americans cast nearly 20,000 votes for 249 nominees during the nominations phase in which Walkabout was one of the 25 businesses now entering into the quarter finals.

Independent We Stand announces the winner of the Indie Award on Dec. 13.
